Male Breast Reduction - Gynecomastia

Male Breast Reduction - Gynecomastia Surgery

What is the male breast reduction - Gynecomastia?

The Gynecomastia is a condition in which a man’s breasts grow out of proportion with the rest of the male body. The surgery is a reducing mastoplasty, aimed at reducing the size, and shaping the man’s chest. In the most severe cases, it is possible that the weight of the excessive breast tissue stretches the areola. In these cases, the position, shape and size of the areola may be surgically improved, and the excess skin removed.

The male breast reduction may develop because of hormonal changes during adolescence or later, be hereditary or because of a disease such as obesity. Other possible causes are the excessive consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, steroids or drugs.

In the case of obese patients, the growth of the breast wouldn’t be Gynecomastia, since in most cases it is caused by the weight increase.

Gynecomastia is characterized by the excess of localized fat, a disproportionate growth of glandular tissue, or a combination of both.

The condition may develop in one or both of the breasts, and in some cases, it may be considered as reconstructive surgery.

Am I a good candidate?

The surgery may be performed on many of any age, though it is better to do it in adults, who will not grow any more. Even though teenagers would be benefited by this procedure, it is possible that they have to undergo a second surgery, as their body continues to grow.

The best candidates are men with relatively normal and steady weight and whose condition could not be solved by alternative methods. Patients must be healthy and can’t have any disease that may put their life in jeopardy, or have unhealthy habits such as the excessive consumption of tobacco, alcohol or drugs.
The patient needs to maintain a positive attitude and have specific plans to improve his physical appearance.

What does the surgery consist of?

Once Dr. Robles has cleared all your doubts and given you all the instructions, you will be in perfect condition to face the surgery. Once the patient is ready to go into de operating room, the surgeon will mark the areas that will be treated and then he will take some photos of them to compare the status before and after the surgery. When this is done, the patient will be sedated and locally anesthetized.

If the male breast reduction is caused by an excessive deposit of fat, the treatment will be done as a regular liposuction. A cannula is inserted through small incisions in the perimeter of the areola, the armpits or an area easy to hide, in order to remove the excess of fat.

Gynecomastia can also be treated by excision: the surgical removal of excess skin, tissue and fat. Incision patterns and location vary depending on the patient. The most common incision pattern is a concentric one around the areola or the natural shape of the chest. Excision techniques and concentric patterns are used when the areola has growth out of proportion and it must be reduced or repositioned.

In some cases, the male breast reduction can be treated with both techniques: liposuction and excision. Any surgical treatment to correct Gynecomastia will require incisions. While some of them may be hidden with the natural shape of the body, some will be visible.

Are there other options?

In cases of a pendulum shape of the breast or a very important growth, there are no alternative techniques that give the same results as the surgical procedure.

Anyway, the patient should keep a healthy diet and workout regularly, which will produce improved results.

How is the recovery from the surgery?

Once the procedure is completed, the patient will be bandaged and the he will be put a compressing brace in order to minimize the swelling and get the body used to its new shape. If Dr. Robles deems it necessary he will also use a small tube under the skin to drain the excess fluids.

Initially, you will have swelling and a discomfort sensation in the incision areas. This is completely normal and will be reduced with medication. The continuous use of bandages and the compressing braces is needed for your recovery after the surgery, until you are told otherwise.

If there were stitches used that the body cannot absorb, these will be removed between 5 to 10 days after the surgery. You will be ready to return to your job, as long as they do not require a straining physical effort.

Healing will continue for several weeks as the swelling wears off and your body gets used to its new shape. The scars left by the incision lines will improve in time, even though they are permanent.

It is very important to go to every medical checkup as they are indicated and to continue with all of the recommendations provided by Dr. Robles. A satisfactory recovery depends on it.

What do I need to get the surgery done?

After all the details have been confirmed with Dr. Robles, you will be given some documents related to the procedure. There, you will find the informed consent for the surgery, which is a written statement that you’ve been fully informed of the surgery you are about to be practiced, as well as the risks involved. You will also be given a sworn statement of your medical history. Both must be read and filled when they are given to you, however you’ll sign them the day of the surgery on Clínica Robles.

In order to assure your safety and to be certain that the surgery will go without any complications, Dr. Robles will perform some routine pre-surgical tests, including blood tests, ECG, surgical risk tests, and whenever necessary an ultrasound scan.

It is of the utmost importance that you have all of the medication and other elements that Dr. Robles had asked you in previous consults. A fast recovery will depend on that. Medication varies according to the type of treatment or your medical history. This is why that information must be the trustworthy.
